Drinking sensibly

A little alcohol can have some health benefits, for example one small glass of red wine each evening can be good for your heart. But drinking too much can lead to serious health problems.

How much is too much?
The government has laid down guidelines for healthy drinking. They recommend no more than:

  • 14 units per week for women
  • 21 units per week for men

They also recommend that you don't drink all your units in one sitting!

What's a unit?
A unit of alcohol is a small measure of spirits, a half pint of beer or a small glass of wine. Typically the glass of wine you have in the pub is two units .

What should I do?
If you would like more information about drinking, or you are worried about your health there are a number of websites that can help.
