Healthy living

There is no secret to living a healthy life. Eat well and stay active, don't smoke and reduce the amount of alcohol you drink.

Eating healthily doesn't mean you have to give up the things you enjoy. The key is everything in moderation.

Try and substitute things like white bread for wholemeal or whole grain. Eat more fruit and vegetables, at least five portions per day. Visit the Five-a-Day website for advice. Above all enjoy what you eat.

The food standard agency has produced information and advice for older people about their diet. It gives practical information about the foods that you need to live a healthy, active life and prevent some of the conditions associated with ageing.

Staying active doesn't mean doing organised exercise. It's about moving around in your home, or getting out to the shops, visiting friends and family.

Any activity you do should be within your own limits. Just half an hour a day of physical activity will help you stay active. This includes doing the housework, a walk in the park, gardening or dancing. In fact anything you enjoy that that gets you moving.

If you haven't been active for a while before starting any new exercise regime speak to your doctor.

You could check out the links on the left or use the activity finder to find out what's on in your area.
